Girls’ Non Access To Education Puts Them At Risk Of Trafficking-Aisha Buhari

Aisha Buhari

Girls’ lack of access to education across the country puts them at  risk of trafficking, exploitation and limits their prospects to excel in life,  wife of President, Hajiiya, Aisha Buhari has said.

She said: “I believe we are all aware that like many countries of the world, our women and girls in Nigeria are often denied the opportunities for education.

“ Lack of education decreases family income, reduces knowledge of good nutrition and health, it increases their vulnerability and put women and girls at risk of trafficking and exploitation. All of these contribute to limiting the economic advancement of women and indeed of the entire nation.

The wife of the president said this in Abuja on Thursday at the graduation ceremony of 7,500 non formal education learners and announcement of the 2nd phase of the UNESCO – Procter Gamble project.

This is even as the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, expressed concern on the increasing marginalisation of women in education, stressing that there is need to foster equity and equal access to education.

Mrs. Buhari, who was represented by the wife of the Vice President, Dolapo Osinbajo, said that Nigeria remains among countries of the world where girls are denied access to education.

The president’s wife explained that adult literacy programme could help girls remain in school.

According to her, the programme could also help women to gain access to create new educational financial and social resources in their various communities

“These will improve their own lives and the lives of their families and the overall condition of lives in their communities. Adult education for parents, especially mothers means creating conditions that ensure that their children, especially their daughters have equal access to basic education.
